What to Bring to Your Driving Test: Complete Checklist

Forget the wrong document and your test is cancelled — no refund. Use this DVSA-verified checklist before you leave the house.

The only thing you must bring: Your UK provisional driving licence photocard. Without it, the test cannot proceed and you forfeit the fee. Everything else below is either optional or handled automatically by the DVSA system.

The Official DVSA Checklist

REQUIRED — Your UK provisional driving licence photocard

The plastic photocard showing your photo and signature. The examiner will check this before the test starts. If the photo is degraded or the card is damaged beyond legibility, they may refuse to proceed.

REQUIRED (if applicable) — Valid passport

Required if your name is in a non-Latin alphabet (Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, etc.) and your licence shows a transliteration. Bring the original passport, not a photocopy.

i
NOT NEEDED — Theory test certificate

Your theory pass is automatically linked to your practical booking in the DVSA system. No paper needed. Your theory must still be valid (within 2 years of pass date).

i
NOT NEEDED — Booking confirmation email

Not required, but useful to have on your phone in case of any administrative queries at the centre.

What About the Car?

If you're using your instructor's car or your own car, the vehicle itself must also meet DVSA requirements. The examiner will check these before the test starts:

  • Valid MOT (if the car is more than 3 years old)
  • Valid insurance covering the test (including the examiner as a passenger)
  • L-plates (or D-plates in Wales) front and rear, correctly positioned
  • A second working rear-view mirror fitted for the examiner's use
  • No warning lights on the dashboard
  • Tyres meeting minimum legal tread depth (1.6mm)

If you're using a hire car (including from a service like TestDay), the hire provider is responsible for all vehicle compliance. You just need your provisional licence.

What to Wear

There's no dress code for the driving test. However, practical advice: wear shoes with a flat sole that give you good feel on the pedals. Flip-flops and high heels are legal but create unnecessary risk — the examiner is watching everything.

The Night Before — Mini Checklist

Locate your provisional licence photocard
Check the test centre address and confirm travel time
Confirm what time your instructor / car is arriving
Sleep — fatigue genuinely affects driving performance
Eat beforehand — 40 minutes of focused driving is tiring

Don't Have a Car for Your Test?

If your instructor has cancelled, you don't have your own car, or you've found a short-notice slot, TestDay.co.uk can provide a DVSA-ready dual-control car and qualified ADI instructor for your test day — including a short warm-up lesson beforehand in the test centre area.

FAQs

What ID do I need for my driving test?

Your UK provisional driving licence photocard. That's it — no other ID is required unless your name is in a non-Latin alphabet.

What happens if I forget my provisional licence?

The test is cancelled and you lose the fee. No exceptions. There is no grace period or way to verify your identity another way.

Do I need to bring my theory certificate?

No. The DVSA links your theory pass to your practical booking automatically.
