Can I Hire a Car for My Driving Test?

The short answer is yes — but the car must have dual controls. Here's what GOV.UK says, and why most hire companies won't work.

GOV.UK Official Answer

"You can take your test in a hire car if it's fitted with dual controls and meets all the other rules."

GOV.UK: Using your own car for your driving test

What This Means in Practice

When you hire a car for your DVSA practical driving test, the vehicle must have dual controls — a second set of foot pedals fitted on the passenger side so the instructor or supervisor can intervene in an emergency. This is a hard DVSA rule.

If a hire car without dual controls is presented at the test centre, DVSA examiner guidance requires the examiner to terminate the test immediately. Your test appointment is forfeited.

Note: If you use your own car (one you own and insure yourself), dual controls are not required. This rule only applies to cars supplied by driving schools or hire services.

Why Enterprise, Hertz and Europcar Won't Work

Enterprise, Hertz, Europcar, and Booking.com car rental do not stock dual-control vehicles. They also do not hire to learner drivers holding provisional licences for DVSA test purposes. They are excluded from this market entirely by regulation — no workaround exists.

Why Arnold Clark Doesn't Solve the Problem Either

Arnold Clark Rental does offer dual-control car hire for provisional licence holders — but their service is designed for supervised practice drives, not DVSA test day use. The key gaps:

  • No instructor included. You must supply your own accompanying driver, aged 23 or over, with a full UK or EU licence held for at least 3 years.
  • No professional ADI. Their insurance terms exclude "Hire and Reward" supervision — meaning a qualified ADI cannot legally act as your supervisor under their policy.
  • Not configured for DVSA test use. The service exists for private practice, not for the actual test.

In short: Arnold Clark can lend you a car to practise in with a family member or friend. They cannot supply what you need for test day itself.

What You Actually Need for Your Driving Test

For your DVSA practical test you need all three of these together:

  1. A dual-control car (DVSA-compliant, insured for test use)
  2. A qualified ADI instructor (DVSA-registered) who accompanies you in the car
  3. A pre-test warm-up lesson in the area around your test centre

This is exactly what TestDay.co.uk provides as a single confirmed booking. You request a quote, we check instructor availability near your test centre, and confirm within 1–2 hours. A £50 deposit secures your slot.
