A dual-control car has a second set of foot pedals fitted on the passenger side, so the instructor can intervene safely in an emergency. When a driving school or hire service provides the car for a test, DVSA car test requirements expect dual controls to be fitted. If a test car provided by an ADI or hire company does not have dual controls, the examiner may refuse to carry out the test. ADI stands for Approved Driving Instructor — a fully qualified instructor who is DVSA-registered and licensed to teach learner drivers. For a driving test, the car must be accompanied by an ADI (not just any qualified driver). All TestDay instructors are ADIs, carry a valid DVSA certificate, and are insured to accompany learner drivers during the practical test. If the DVSA cancels your test (for example due to examiner unavailability), your deposit remains credited to your account and we'll rebook you with the same instructor at no extra charge. The £50 deposit reserves your instructor's time and car for your test slot — once paid, they hold that time exclusively for you. The remaining balance is paid directly to your instructor on test day. No deposit is taken until we have confirmed that an instructor is available for your slot. If we cannot provide cover, you are not charged.

You don't pay anything when you submit the form. After we confirm an instructor is available, we send you a secure payment link for the £50 deposit. Once that's paid, the booking is confirmed. The remaining balance is settled directly with your instructor on test day — not through us.

We'll tell you as soon as possible — usually within a few hours of your enquiry. If we cannot find an instructor for your slot, you are not charged anything. We cover hundreds of test centres and in the vast majority of cases can find cover. For very remote centres or extremely tight same-day requests, we'll always be upfront if we can't help.

Yes — meeting at the test centre is the standard option. Most learners walk to the test centre and meet their instructor there with the car. If you'd prefer a pickup from a nearby address, select "pickup" in the form and enter your postcode — a small travel contribution may apply.
